Six Gators freshmen who will not redshirt
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Six Florida Gators freshmen hit the field against Eastern Washington. Making their fifth appearance means all six of them will not be eligible to redshirt.
Shemar James, Trevor Etienne, Devin Moore, Chris McClellan, Kamari Wilson, and Miguel Mitchell all have played in every game this season.
“In practice right now, Shemar James and Scooby, Kamari, Don (Donovan McMillon), Miguel Mitchell, a lot of these guys that are at the high communication are young players,” Billy Napier said on Wednesday. “I think they continue to learn every day a little something different and new. I don’t know that we’re ever going to be not learning something relative to communication
James made his fourth start of the season while Wilson made his first start in place of the injured Trey Dean. He logged his first tackle for loss and sack against Tennessee last Saturday. James has played more since Ventrell Miller’s injury. The freshman from Mobile, Alabama is a promising young player who projects to be a full-time starter (he’s already started three games this year) either by the end of this season or as a sophomore.

Wilson notched his first tackle for loss against Tennessee. He logged 19 snaps against the Vols, the most he has played in a game this season. Wilson took over for Trey Dean, who was seemingly benched for a drive. Wilson graded out as UF’s ninth-best player against Tennessee.
The Oklahoma native, McClellan, played his best football last Saturday against Tennessee. McClellan had two tackles for a loss and was credited with half a sack. He’s a key player on the defensive front and developing into a key role player for the Gators.
Mitchell is the one freshman who burned his redshirt that hasn’t played at his position through four games. Mitchell played his first snaps on defense in the Gators’ first drive against Eastern Washington.
