A dream was realized when Zach Carter’s phone lit up. The 513 area code wasn’t familiar but the voice on the other end of the phone made his night. With the 95th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals were taking Carter.

He was the second Florida Gator selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. Kaiir Elam was taken 23rd overall by the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

Carter thought about coming out for the 2021 draft. He was coming off of a monster season for the Gators. He led the team in sacks with five and tackles for a loss with nine and a half. Carter returned to the team in 2021 and was a leader for the defense. He started all 12 games for the team in 2021. Carter improved on his stats from his junior season. He racked up 11 tackles for a loss and notched eight sacks.

Carter was jacked up to hear his name called Friday night.

Gervon Dexter overcome with emotion

Dexter came to the University of Florida brand new to football. Basketball was his first love and sport of choice, so he had a lot to learn. Carter became a mentor and a big brother to Dexter, who will step into a leadership role for the Gators now.

It wasn’t just his fellow defensive linemen. The entire building was jacked up for Carter. Redshirt freshman Corey Collier responded.

Carter was a favorite in the building, that is clear.

Dameon Pierce, staffer Bri Wade, and videographer Randy Mickens all joined in on the celebration.

Carter will be among a couple of familiar faces with his new team. The Bengals selected Evan McPherson last year and also have former Flordia offensive lineman Fred Johnson on the practice team.
