GAINESVILLE, Fla. — For the second time in as many months, Florida starting quarterback DJ Lagway is in a boot. Lagway is now nursing some soreness in his foot that he sustained against Miami, according to a source.

Gators Online confirmed with multiple sources that Lagway was in a boot on Monday.

“Just precautionary,” a source close to Lagway told Gators Online. “His foot got stepped on (against Miami) … and he felt some foot soreness.”

Lagway also spent time in a boot in late July after sustaining a calf injury, which was first reported by Gators Online. He was out for the first few days of practice and only participated in position drills and 7v7 drills for most of training camp, missing both scrimmages.

Lagway didn’t start doing 11v11 drills until the last three days of camp. He also didn’t throw in the spring while nursing a shoulder injury. The time he missed in the spring, summer and fall has set him back this season, with Lagway struggling in Florida’s three losses.

“He’s battled. He’s battled. He’s a young player. He’s had a unique offseason, and he’s battling his tail off to try to do his job for his teammates,” Napier said of Lagway after the Miami game. “The team rallied around him this week. They respect him as a person, as a leader, as a competitor. They know what he’s been through, and I think that that’s their intent, and they certainly showed up and played that way.

“You gotta try to keep it technical for him. He’s still a young player. You gotta keep him process-oriented, and you gotta show him where if he does it the right way, he’ll get a different result. And quarterback play oftentimes is a reflection of the play around the quarterback … He’s contributing to some of our issues, and there are also a lot of other players. So as a whole, the unit has gotta do much better.”

After throwing for three touchdowns and 120 yards in one half against Long Island, Lagway has regressed with each game. He threw for 222 yards with a touchdown and a pick versus USF, followed by five interceptions at LSU and a career-low 61 yards as a starter at Miami.

“I didn’t play my best ball tonight,” Lagway said after the UM loss. “I took what the defense gave me. I didn’t make a lot of plays that I needed to make to stand out in the game. I kind of just managed it. I didn’t make a lot of big plays, so I’m trying to find the balance between both. And still just development. Just trying to get better.”

On the season, Lagway has thrown for 690 yards with five touchdowns, six interceptions and a 67.5% completion rate. He was a Freshman All-American last year and posted a 6-1 record as a starter, throwing for 1,915 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 12 games played.
