On Thursday evening, the University of Florida climbed multiple spots in the 2023 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings, as four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson went public with his commitment to the Gators. Fellow four-star defensive back Bryce Thornton committed to UF today as well.

With tonight’s update, the Gators are now equipped with the No. 8-ranked recruiting class. They previously checked in at No. 10.

Johnson, who hails from Tampa (Fla.) Wharton, was previously committed to Ohio State before reopening in his recruitment in late July. That was also just roughly 24 hours after spending multiple days in Gainesville.

Since then, Johnson has attended UF’s matchups against Utah and Kentucky and is returning for the LSU game as well. The Under Armour All-American is the 13th prospect in the top 300 to commit to the Gators this recruiting cycle.

According to the rankings, All-American defensive lineman Kelby Collins is the highest-ranked prospect in UF’s class. The Alabama native ranks as the No. 7 defensive lineman and No. 66 player overall.

Additional Gators commits inside the top 300 include wide receivers Eugene Wilson III and Aidan Mizell, defensive linemen T.J. SearcyWill NormanKamran James and Gavin Hill, safety Jordan Castell, running back Treyaun Webb, EDGE Isaiah Nixon, and cornerbacks Sharif Denson and Ja’Keem Jackson.

The Gators also rank fourth in the SEC, with 80 percent of their commits being blue-chip prospects. Eighty percent of them hail from the Sunshine State as well.

Alabama, Georgia and LSU are the schools currently ranked ahead of the Gators.

Background on the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings

It’s the only ranking that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies: On3, 247Sports, Rivals.com and ESPN. It’s the only ranking that equally weights the four major media companies at 25 percent. Other industry composite ratings disproportionately weight their own rating.

It also solves the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle. It compiles the highest-rated commits for each team up to a total based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power Five schools.

With this model, there are no bonus points for having more commitments than other teams and only small deductions occur when a team has fewer commitments than the rolling average. Unlike distribution (bell) curves, this model doesn’t disproportionately weight a team’s top three or four highest-rated commits and is a more accurate representation of an entire class.
