Some college football legends are currently in Jacksonville for Saturday’s matchup between the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs.

Two of them are former Heisman Trophy quarterbacks for the Gators in Tim Tebow and Danny Wuerffel.

On Saturday, both Florida quarterbacks sat down with the SEC Network’s Marty Smith and Ryan McGee to discuss the rivalry. That included Tebow’s matchup against the Dawgs in 2007 where Georgia players ran into the end zone midway through the first quarter to celebrate their first touchdown.

“I had honestly no idea what was happening; I truly didn’t,” said Tebow. “We were over on the sidelines, we’re talking and kind of game planning about when we’d get the ball back, and all of a sudden, you just…sort of through all the players, see a bunch of people head out to the middle of the field.

“Honestly, I didn’t know if a fight broke out or what was happening. You know, you get in severe trouble if you run out on the field. (My reaction), it’s a question mark between what is happening and a little bit of frustration starting to build. There is no doubt about that.”

Like Tebow, Wuerffel witnessed plenty of success against the Dawgs, as he threw for 700-plus yards and a series-record 11 touchdowns in four games. He was not shy when discussing the importance of this rivalry for college football.

“When you play a home game and an away game, that feels like sometimes another game, but when you play Georgia, it’s different. You can just tell,” Wuerffel said.

“Coach Spurrier had a way. Earlier in the week, he was very relaxed, loosy goosey as he would say, but then as you got closer to the game, he was intense. There was no laughing or giggling.

“When it was Georgia week, he was dead serious on Monday. You just knew. There was something in his heart that really wanted to beat this team.”
