Trey Bonham commits to the Florida Gators.

Another week, another transfer for new Florida Gators head basketball coach Todd Golden, as VMI transfer Trey Bonham has announced his commitment to the SEC program.

The highly-regarded transfer was in Gainesville this past weekend for a visit with the orange and blue.

Bonham, a 6-foot, 170-pound guard, averaged 13.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists during the 2021 season. He started all 29 games and scored a season-high 31 points against Samford on Jan. 20.

As for his percentages, Bonham shot nearly 48 percent from the field, including 34.8 percent from downtown, and also sunk 82 percent of his free throws.

The Gators officially announced the addition on Tuesday morning.

“Trey is simply a great fit four program,” Golden said. “By advanced metrics, he is one of the most efficient guards in the country while using a high percentage of his teams possessions. He has a great ability to rim-finish and draw fouls at a high level. Most importantly, he’s really proud to be a Florida Gator.”

The native of Mobile, Alabama, Bonham made an impact during his freshman campaign as well, averaging 8.6 points and 2.8 rebounds for the Keydets.

With the addition of Bonham, the Gators have now reeled in three players out of the transfer portal.

Will Richard, a guard transfer from Belmont, kicked things off a few weeks back. He averaged 12.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this past season as a freshman.

Then you have Alex Fudge, a native of Jacksonville who spent his freshman season at LSU. The 6-foot-8, 185-pound forward highly considered UF coming out of high school as well, the Tigers ultimately won out over a flurry of additional suitors.

During the 2021-22 season, Fudge averaged just 3.3 points with 3.2 rebounds in 13.9 minutes per game; however, the top-100 prospect is jam-packed with potential with his best basketball still ahead of him.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
