One of the elite pass catchers in the class of 2023 has shrunk his list of top contenders.

Johntay Cook II, a product of DeSoto (Texas) High, just dished out his top-five schools and the University of Florida made the cut.

Texas A&M, Texas, Michigan and Jackson State are the additional finalists in his recruitment.

The four-star prospect initially planned to attend UF’s Orange and Blue Game, but that trip was ultimately canceled due to his track schedule.

However, even without ever setting foot in Gainesville, Cook was comfortable enough to label the Gators as a top contender.

“I had a really good relationship with coach Colbert when he was at USC. He recently got back in touch with us and we already had a pretty good connection, so I figured why not?” Cook recently told On3’s Sam Spiegelman

“I’ve heard some good things about Gainesville, so I’m gonna go check it out.”

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four major recruiting sites, Cook is the No. 7 wide receiver and No. 46 player regardless of position.

Florida: “I gotta go see what Gainesville is talking about. Me and coach KC have had a great relationship since he was at USC.”

Texas: “I love the coaches, the school, the city, and more importantly I can see myself doing damage in that offense.”

Inside the Film Room

Cook is a smooth-moving receiver who is one of the better route-runners in the 2023 cycle. Shows the ability to tempo and toggle speeds within his routes. Can win at all levels of the field.

Has long arms with a 6-foot-4 wing-span at 5-foot-11.5. The length helps create a large catch radius. Productive and efficient as a junior while facing top competition at one of the top talent-producing high school programs in Texas.

Scored 18 touchdowns on just 38 receptions as a junior. Will need to continue improving on his reliability as a pass-catcher and eliminate concentration drops. — On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power
