Tre’Vez Johnson talks new scheme, new team, enthusiasm for new season
If there’s one Florida Gators football player who is ready to take on No. 7 Utah on Saturday, it’s defensive back Tre’Vez Johnson.
The defending Pac-12 champs travel to Gainesville for a sold-out night game in The Swamp.
“This ain’t gonna be nothing they’ve seen before,” Johnson told Gators Online and others. “Especially being in that Swamp, ain’t nothing like 90,000. This is the best atmosphere in football, college football. It’s a night game too. Like, I’m so excited.”
As he heads into his junior season, he sits atop the depth chart for the Gators’ STAR position.
Johnson started seven games last season at that spot, making 24 total tackles and an interception.
“I’m excited,” he said. “I’m ready to get out there and make plays. I know what comes with playing that position. It’s a big role I do a lot of different stuff but I’m ready to go out there and play so we’re working.”
What his role is in the new defense
Patrick Toney enters his first season with the Gators as co-defensive coordinator. He coaches the safeties and nickel backs, so he works directly with Johnson.
What does Toney’s new scheme mean for Johnson’s position?
“I don’t think it’s too much different,” Johnson said. “It’s just a lot more simplified in this defense. I don’t have to think as much and I feel like just being in this scheme you play fast.”
Toney’s message to his defense ahead of the Gators’ matchup with Utah is short and sweet.
“Got to dominate, got to take care of the little details and don’t leave any doubt,” Johnson said. “Just be detailed, finish the plays, execute, dominate.”

A team with something to prove
Although it’s a new era for Florida with Billy Napier at the helm, last year’s losing record still looms over the program’s head.
“6-7 can’t happen again,” he said. “I don’t think anyone in that locker room wants it to happen again. Now it’s come out there, execute and dominate.”
Johnson feels there’s something different with this year’s team that the Gators failed to do a season ago.
“There was so much talent on that team and didn’t take the next step,” he said. “I feel like this is what we did with this squad. We’re taking the next step with this team and this staff.”
