Trey Dean announced Wednesday night that he will return for a fifth season with the Florida Gators.

Dean released a video where he was speaking over his career highlights.

“It has been said that a journey is never-ending. There are lessons to be learned along the way. There will be adversity, there will be growth, there will be endless opportunities to improve,” he narrated in the video “The work done in the dark when no one is around. All those things make the journey worthwhile. Despite all that, still know that the journey isn’t quite done yet. For me, I know I still have work to do. See you in the Swamp, this fall.”

Dean was a senior this past season, but is taking advantage of the free year of eligibility given to all fall sport athletes in 2020 due to COVID-19. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound safety led the Gators with 93 tackles (41 solo) in 2021.

Dean started 12 of Florida’s 13 games and has made 27 starts in his career. He has played in 50 total games, with 179 tackles and four interceptions to his name. Dean was named to the All-SEC Freshman team in 2018 and has also been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times.

Dean returns to lead Gators secondary

Florida has a lot of talent returning on the defensive side of the ball. Dean will slot right back into his starting role at safety, while Rashad Torrence II should start next to him. The Gators also have two redshirt freshmen with a lot of potential in Donovan McMillion and Corey Collier Jr.

Dean was invited to the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine on Monday, but decided to return to school after multiple meetings with new UF coach Billy Napier and co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney. The two coaches made their pitch to Dean, and that included being a leader for the younger players. Dean’s impact off the field will be as important as the production he brings to Florida’s secondary next fall.
