Florida senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. made school history on Wednesday and rewrote the record books in one of the 3-point categories. Clayton hit a triple for the 42nd game in a row at South Carolina, and he happened to do it in the same place where the previous mark was set.

With his first 3-pointer against the Gamecocks, Clayton broke UF’s record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer, breaking Michael Frazier II’s mark of 41. Coincidentally, Frazier set Florida’s single-game 3-pointer record at South Carolina, hitting 11 in his 37-point performance on March 4, 2014.

Clayton tied Frazier’s record against Texas and said he was aware of the record after the game.

“I just learned about the streak, a couple of weeks ago when it 36, 37. I honestly can’t remember the last game (with no 3-pointer), 41 games, that’s what it was,” Clayton said of his streak at the time.

“I know to have my name with some of those other guys up there, they were great players. Obviously being a part of the Gators tradition. I’m happy about that. But just getting a win, that’s all that matters.”

Walter Clayton Jr. only has one UF game with a 3

Clayton leads the Gators in scoring with a career-high 17.9 points per game and is also averaging a career high in assists (3.7). He’s currently averaging 19.8 points in SEC play heading into Wednesday night.

Clayton has only had one game without a 3-pointer in two years at UF, going 0-for-1 from downtown last season against Quinnipiac on Dec. 30, 2023. He’s made a triple in 54 of 55 career games with Florida.

“I think it talks about two things. Number one is confidence, and number two is consistency,” Florida coach Todd Golden said of Clayton’s record. “I think every team we’re playing against is trying to limit Walter’s ability to make 3s, and he’s been able to do it 41 straight games, you know. And Walt’s obviously one of the most talented players in America. He does not need much time or space to be able to get those shots up. Walt’s one of those guys, you know, you might play great defense on him, but great offense is a little better than great defense sometimes.

“I’m just really proud of him for what he’s been able to accomplish, obviously, from an individual standpoint, but also the way he’s been able to lead us to, you know, the season we’re having. There were a lot of question marks around him in terms of, what is he going to be able to do? Is he gonna be able to take on this leadership role? Well, starting point guard for a top-five team in the country, and currently, being talked about as a second-team All-American, I think he’s doing a great job. His consistency and his competitiveness for us have been elite all year. He’s a guy that he makes you a better coach, being able to roll him out there every night and let him play with the freedom that he does.”
