National Signing Day: Miami Hurricanes, Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators | How Did They Do?

While there is no recruiting drama for the Gators at this year’s Under Armour All-America Game, there is a strong debate as to which quarterback could finish in the top spot.

Those signal callers in Orlando this week are Florida signee DJ Lagway and Alabama signee Julian Sayin. Both are On3 5-star prospects, with Sayin and Lagway checking in at No. 7 and No. 16 overall, respectively.

Climbing nine spots in a short period of time seems awfully difficult; however, that is not much at all following a week of scouting at an All-American event. We have seen major adjustments before.

If Lagway, a product of Willis (Texas) High, manufactures a strong week on the field, he will have a good chance to surpass Sayin as On3’s No. 1-ranked quarterback.

“Lagway has long been considered to be one of the more physically-gifted 2024 quarterbacks, checking in at 6-foot-2.5, 230 pounds with a plus arm and rushing ability,” said Charles Power, On3’s Director of Scouting and Rankings.

“The future Gator took off as a senior, posting a monster final prep campaign. Lagway was the most productive top 2024 quarterback by a fair margin, completing 72.1 percent of his passes while accounting for 5,591 yards from scrimmage and 74 touchdowns. His play on Friday nights at Willis (Texas) High has put him in the conversation as the cycle’s top quarterback prospect.

“A strong week in Orlando could add further intrigue into the battle for the top quarterback spot.”

Lagway turned to God for assistance with final decision

“My school is like 30 minutes away from A&M. All the teachers, coaches, principals all are A&M diehards. There were people all around the school telling me, ‘You should go to A&M.’ But at the end of the day, I just had to pray about it and make the right decision for me, not for anybody else. I feel like the University of Florida was that,” Lagway told Gators Online at Friday’a UA All-America Game Media Day.

“It definitely would have taken a lot (to flip him), especially with Texas A&M, since they had a new coaching staff. I’m 100 percent locked in to the Florida Gators. It definitely had me thinking a little bit. It was crazy. I talked to God and prayed about it and it led me to overall choosing the Gators.”
