4-star CB Gregory 'Zae' Thomas commits to Florida State, continues hot streak for 'Noles
Another day, another big commitment for the Florida State Seminoles.
While there might not have been as much drama with this one as some of Florida State’s recent commitments, there’s no question that this is one of the most important yet.
American Heritage four-star cornerback Gregory “Zae” Thomas announced during a ceremony Sunday evening that he will play his college football at Florida State. He chose the Seminoles over Clemson and others.
Thomas threw a little last-minute suspense into his announcement at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. At first, he put on a Clemson baseball cap, but quickly removed it to show one with a Seminole logo.
“Coach Norvell has completely turned around the program,” Thomas said of Florida State head coach Mike Norvell in an interview with On3’s Chad Simmons. “Anyone with eyes can see that Norvell has flipped things at Florida State and he has the belief back. Not many believed in him when he came in to try and fix things, but they do now. He is a great coach, his energy never changes and he is a winner that is there for his players.”

Thomas, who is rated one of the top 30 cornerbacks in the nation according to the On3 Industry Ranking, is also a top-300 prospect overall and one of the top 50 recruits in Florida. He has visited Florida State numerous times during the recruiting process, and his relationship with FSU defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain goes back several years.
“Coach Surtain, he’s like an uncle to me,” Thomas said earlier. “He’s known me since I was in third grade. Hanging out with him is kind of like being around family.”
Thomas had high praise for the Florida State organization and the Tallahassee community after his most recent visit.

“It was great. I got a real weekend to really just be with the coaches and continue to build our relationship,” Thomas said. “I saw more of Tallahassee than I did on my previous visits, so it was good to just see all that. … Just hanging out with the players. A couple of them, I already know from Heritage, and some that are not from Heritage but are from the [South Florida] area. Just spending time with them and getting a players’ perspective on how it is at Florida State.”
Another interesting tie between Thomas and FSU is the fact that he has Seminole heritage in his family.
He is the fifth commitment for Florida State’s 2025 class this week, joining four-star defensive linemen Kevin Wynn and Myron Charles, four-star receiver CJ Wiley and four-star tight end Chase Loftin. The Seminoles now are comfortably inside the top 10 of the national recruiting rankings.
