The Florida State Seminoles have pulled off an important Signing Day flip by taking big-bodied wide receiver Tae’shaun Gelsey away from the Florida Gators.

Florida State came into this recruitment late in an attempt to save its wide receiver class following several fall defections, and the Seminoles were quickly able to get Gelsey on campus multiple times. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder visited FSU for both the North Carolina and Florida games.

The big separator here for Florida State was the fact that he could play wide receiver for the Seminoles. The Gators were recruiting Gelsey as a tight end and wanted him to put on weight when he got to college. That didn’t seem to appeal to the Jacksonville product, and FSU recruited him to line up out wide.

“I’ve been playing receiver all my life,” Gelsey told GatorsOnline. “I went to a Florida State camp and Coach (Mike) Norvell saw me as a tight end at first, but the words from him, he said I made a lot of progress and proved him wrong. The film this year impressed him, so I can stay at receiver. He thinks it’s good the way I can move at my size right now.”

As Gelsey’s recruitment started to heat up between Florida State and UF down the stretch, he was supposed to visit each school in the final two weeks of the season. But he ended up not showing up to Florida for the Ole Miss game, but did make it to Tallahassee the next.

“Coach Norvell has a lot of energy and he always treats every player the right way,” Gelsey said after watching the Seminoles and Gators play last weekend. “On a decision, I’m still conflicted and still going to do the research on the best spot.”
