This time, Jordan Travis was able to slip on his white Florida State baseball cap before the third quarter even started.

After leading the Seminoles to a 32-point halftime lead Saturday against visiting Louisiana, Travis watched from the sideline as his teammates finished off a 49-17 thrashing. It would have been worse if not for two late scores against the Seminoles’ backup defense.

With the win, Florida State improves to 8-3 on the season heading into next Friday’s showdown with rival Florida in Tallahassee. The Seminoles have now won their last four games by a combined margin of 173 to 39.

Travis and the Florida State offense scored touchdowns on five of six possessions in the first half to take a 35-3 lead at the break. The only time the Seminoles didn’t score was when running back Treshaun Ward tripped in the backfield on a third-and-short; they converted nine of 10 third downs in the half.

Ward more than made up for it, however, with a pair of early touchdown runs out of the wildcat formation — one from 36 yards and another from one yard out.

Florida State’s starting defense again was dominant, allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns to score their only first-half points on a field goal as the second quarter ended. FSU’s yardage advantage in the first half was 318 to 121.

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ only two touchdowns came in the fourth quarter with Florida State’s starting defenders on the bench.

Travis finished with just 112 yards through the air on 9-of-14 passing, but he did plenty of damage with his legs. He ran for two touchdowns and threw for another before giving way to backups Tate Rodemaker and A.J. Duffy. Even walk-on QB Gino English played in the final minutes.

The Seminoles rushed for more than 200 yards in the first half alone; that marks the sixth straight game that FSU’s backs have hit that mark.

Rodemaker only threw one pass, but it was a 45-yard completion to receiver Kentron Poitier. Duffy, a true freshman, then threw his first career touchdown pass on a 16-yarder to tight end Markeston Douglas, who made a nifty one-handed catch. Duffy was incomplete on his other three pass attempts.

Benson led Florida State on the ground with 16 carries for 80 yards and one touchdown.

The Seminoles and Gators will square off Friday at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. Florida fell to 6-5 Saturday with a loss at Vanderbilt.
