He might be FSU coach Mike Norvell’s greatest transfer portal success story, and now he is heading to the NFL.

Trey Benson was selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the 66th overall pick, early in the third round, on Friday night. He was the fifth Seminole selected in the 2024 NFL Draft and the fourth on Day 2.

FSU defensive end Jared Verse went with the 19th pick in the first round Thursday, while Keon Coleman, Braden Fiske and Renardo Green all went in the second round.

Benson’s rookie contract is four years, 6.059 million. There is a signing bonus in the deal worth $1,227,054.

Benson, who started his career at Oregon in 2020, was hardly a factor on the field during his two seasons with the Ducks. He sustained a major knee injury as a freshman and then saw very limited action in 2021. The Mississippi product accounted for just 22 total yards during his two years at Oregon.

Benson’s FSU career was a completely different — and happier — story. He rushed for over 900 yards in each of his two seasons with the Seminoles, and he also broke off a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in 2022.

The former four-star recruit wrapped up his time at Florida State with 2,266 total yards from scrimmage and 25 total touchdowns.

While helping FSU roll to a 13-0 record in 2023, Benson rushed for 905 yards and 14 touchdowns on 156 carries. He also had an 80-yard touchdown against Wake Forest on a screen pass.

Benson was especially productive against FSU’s in-state rivals. In four total games against Miami and Florida, he racked up 414 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns — the final two coming in the second half of the Seminoles’ comeback win over the Gators in The Swamp in late November.
