Florida State might have just put an exclamation point on its outstanding 2023 transfer class.

All-ACC cornerback Fenrell Cypress, who starred at Virginia before entering the transfer portal last month, announced on Sunday that he will be joining the Seminoles next season.

Cypress is the No. 2 transfer prospect in the country, according to the On3 transfer rankings, and he is the fourth of the top 11 to join Florida State.

“This is another fantastic addition to our program,” head coach Mike Norvell said in a statement released after Cypress signed with the Seminoles. “Fentrell is a great player who possesses the unique combination of length and athleticism. He has a huge upside and brings a proven track record of consistent playmaking into our defensive backfield. He has collected incredible experience at the college level while proving himself to be a smart and disciplined player whose success has shown up on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Fentrell is a tremendous fit for the Nole Family as we continue on our CLIMB moving forward.”

Cypress joins former Western Michigan defensive tackle Braden Fiske, former UTEP offensive guard Jeremiah Byers and former South Carolina tight end Jaheim Bell as the other highly-rated transfers.

Cypress, who goes by the nickname “Deuce,” visited Florida State in mid-December and had high praise for the Seminoles.

“Florida State can be considered DBU,” he said. “That’s a big thing. … The coaching staff that’s here right now is still continuing that journey in the history of DBs, teaching everybody all they need to know. So it definitely has a part to do with it. But right now, it’s all about the present and what they’re doing now.

“I could definitely see myself building on that legacy of DBU.”

Cypress, who originally hails from Rock Hill, S.C., earned first-team All-ACC honors this season from Pro Football Focus and second-team in voting by the conference’s media and coaches. He started every game at cornerback for Virginia and had an overall defensive grade of 87.8 from PFF. His pass coverage grade was 87.6.

The announcement from Cypress continues a big New Year’s Day for the Seminoles, who earlier found out that star DT Fabien Lovett is returning for the 2023 season.
