Did Washington close gap on No. 4 Florida State in CFP Rankings?

The second edition of the 2023 College Football Playoff rankings was released on Tuesday night, and for the second straight week, Florida State checked in at No. 4 — behind Ohio State, Georgia and Michigan.

There was some speculation this week that No. 5 Washington could jump ahead of the Seminoles following the Huskies’ win at Southern Cal — their third win this season against a ranked opponent.

That didn’t happen. But when College Football Playoff Committee Chairman Boo Corrigan was asked after the rankings show whether Washington had closed the gap on the top four, his answer might have been a little concerning for Florida State fans.

“Yeah, not to be funny, but you can’t get much closer than 4 to 5 in what we’re doing,” Corrigan said, while acknowledging that the Huskies also have some blemishes on their resume. “Again, we talked a lot about it. The close calls with Arizona State and Stanford, who have a combined five wins, a defense that’s giving up 42 and 33 – 33 points twice and 32 points in games. Incredibly explosive offense. Michael Penix Jr. has been amazing this year, but as we looked at it, we had Washington at 5 below Florida State.”

USC actually fell out of the rankings following its loss to Washington. However, the Huskies will play another ranked team in Utah this Saturday, as well as Oregon State in a few weeks.

According to ESPN’s College Football Power Index, Florida State has the 58th strongest schedule, while Washington has the 41st.

When asked about Florida State’s resume, Corrigan was clearly impressed with the football being played by the Seminoles.

“Yeah, again, really good team,” the committee chairman said. “Coach [Mike] Norvell has done a heck of a job down there in Tallahassee, and the combination of the wins over LSU and at Clemson, against Duke, winning last week without Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman — two of their key elements of offense. And the physicality of their defense, and their offense puts up 40 points a game, the defense allows about 17 points a game. So they continue to play really well, and it’s a really well-coached football team.”
