Link Jarrett didn’t get to see the final seven innings in person, but the end result was still plenty sweet for the FSU baseball head coach and his team.

Despite having their head coach ejected after the second inning and trailing until the bottom of the seventh, No. 1 seed FSU erupted for five runs in their final two at-bats to knock off Mississippi State on Sunday night, 5-2.

The win gives the Seminoles the NCAA Tallahassee Regional championship and propels them into next week’s Super Regionals against the winner of the Corvallis, Ore., Regional.

It was a heated night at Dick Howser Stadium, with players from both sides chirping early and then Jarrett getting ejected after the second inning. From that point on, Florida State’s fans let the umpires and Mississippi State’s players and coaches hear their displeasure almost every time there was a delay or stoppage in play.

FSU fell behind early when Mississippi State leadoff hitter Gehrig Frei blasted a home run to left field on the very first pitch of the game. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth on a solo homer from Joe Powell.

Florida State, meanwhile, kept getting runners on base but failing to cash in. After six innings, the Seminoles trailed 2-0 and had stranded 12 runners.

That changed in the bottom of the seventh when first baseman Myles Bailey drilled a leadoff double and third baseman Cal Fisher followed that with a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2.

One inning later, FSU outfielder Max Williams drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded single to give the Seminoles a 4-2 advantage. Bailey followed that up with an RBI single of his own.

For the second night in a row, FSU got a brilliant pitching performance from its starter. One night after Jamie Arnold struck out a season-high 13 batters against the Bulldogs, sophomore Wes Mendes pitched a career-high eight innings. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking two.

Joe Charles pitched a scoreless ninth for the second night in a row.

Even in the final frame, the emotions remained high as one Mississippi State batter and an assistant coach were ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
