Cal Fisher continued his recent power surge, the freshmen bats delivered in a big way, and Wes Mendes was again impressive on the mound as the No. 5 Florida State baseball team knocked off Lipscomb, 11-5, on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

The Seminoles are now 15-0 on the season.

Fisher, who had two doubles and a grand slam in Friday night’s 10-1 win, had a double in the Seminoles’ five-run third inning and then an opposite-field bomb to right in his next at-bat to help spark the FSU offense.

Freshman Hunter Carns had an RBI infield single in the second inning and then connected on his second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left, to cap off the scoring in the third.

Fellow freshman slugger Myles Bailey added four hits himself, including an RBI single, as the Seminoles pounded out 14 hits and 11 runs against Bison pitching. Drew Faurot went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBIs for an FSU offense that scored in five of the first six innings.

All of it, of course, was more than enough run support for Mendes, who was once again dominant on the mound for Florida State.

The Ole Miss transfer came into the game with a 0.60 ERA in three starts. He struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings of work on Saturday, walking none and allowing just four hits. The only run he allowed came when reliever Ben Barrett came on in the sixth with one out and threw a wild pitch with a runner at third.

Mendes now has 35 strikeouts and three walks in 20 1/3 innings of work this season. He’s allowed two runs.

BJ Gibson had a single and a sac-fly RBI, and right-fielder Gage Harrelson added an RBI double to the wall in center to go along with a great defensive play he made at the wall in right in the top of the fifth inning.

The Seminoles had a 10-run lead heading to the seventh inning and were three outs away from a run-rule victory. But Barrett walked leadoff hitter. Connor Hults came in and hit his first batter, allowed a single and then issues a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to score a run.

He was pulled, and Payton Prescott came in and allowed a bloop single, RBI groundout and sac fly to center before striking out the next batter to finally end the inning. So, the 11-1 lead became an 11-5 lead.

Chris Knier pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out two and inducing a flyout to center with the bases loaded to get out of the jam. And Brady Louck came on and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Seminoles, who struck out 15 Lipscomb batters for a second straight game.

Sunday’s game has been cancelled due to weather concerns.
