The Florida State baseball team still has an enormous hill to climb just to make the ACC Tournament, but the Seminoles are stringing together wins again as the regular season comes to a close.

After sweeping Mercer over the weekend, Link Jarrett’s team came from behind to knock off Jacksonville, 6-4, on Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles (19-28) have now won four straight games and six of nine as they head into this weekend’s home showdown with the No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (39-7).

Led by freshman DeAmez Ross, who had his first career leadoff home run to go along with two other hits, the Seminoles pounded out 13 hits and scored four times in the final two innings to turn a 3-2 deficit into an eventual 6-4 victory.

“DeAmez had a great ball game,” Jarrett said. “The catch in center field, just a phenomenal jump. … And it’s fitting he got the hit that won the ball game late. So, it was DeAmez Day today.”

Doug Kirkland also continued his solid pitching out of the bullpen, allowing just one run in three innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Freshman Cameron Smith delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. And then with the Seminoles trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, Treyton Rank tied the game with a two-out RBI double to left field. Smith then scored moments later from third on a wild pitch to give Florida State a 4-3 lead.

It was short-lived as Jacksonville’s Kyle Armstrong launched his 23rd homer of the season — and second at Dick Howser Stadium this year — off Kirkland to tie the score at 4-4.

Florida State answered right back again, though.

Ross delivered a two-out RBI single to give the Seminoles the lead, and then sophomore Jaime Ferrer followed with a double — his team-leading 21st — to plate Ross and give Florida State a 6-4 lead heading to the ninth.

Kirkland pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, and the Seminoles had their 19th win of the season.

“Doug, you see the maturity of the stuff,” Jarrett said. “He’s in the zone more than he was when this thing started. He’s had some big moments. He’s intense and emotional in what he’s doing. He wants to win, he wants to compete.

“I’m proud of the way we played today.”

To reach the ACC Tournament and therefore have a shot at advancing to the NCAA Tournament, Florida State will have to pass at least two teams in the conference standings. Currently, the Seminoles have six ACC wins. The three closest to them all have nine, with six games remaining.
