Florida State Baseball stays perfect with 7-2 win over Georgetown in series opener

It wasn’t the easiest win Florida State has enjoyed all season. In fact, the game was very much in doubt in the seventh inning.
But the No. 7 FSU baseball team strung together enough hits, took advantage of some wildness from Georgetown pitchers and got some very good pitching itself in a 7-2 victory Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles improve to 9-0 on the season.
Florida State ace Jamie Arnold gave up his first earned run of the year — and two total — in five innings of work. Georgetown got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off the lefty All-American, who finished with eight strikeouts, two walks (the first two of the season for Arnold) and four hits allowed on 74 pitches.
Alex Lodise was the reason the game was tied 2-2 when Arnold came out after five innings. The junior shortstop continued his torrid start to the season with a two-run home run in the third inning. He had three hits on the night.
The Seminoles took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when Jaxson West singled to left and advanced to third on a two-base error by the left fielder and scored on Drew Faurot’s sacrifice fly to center.
Georgetown immediately threatened in the top of the seventh, however.
Florida State reliever John Abraham walked two batters, and another reached on a catcher’s interference call. But junior reliever Maison Martinez came in and extinguished the Hoyas’ chances, striking out the first batter he faced with the bases loaded and then inducing a grounder to shortstop to end the inning.
The Seminoles then got the breathing room they needed in the bottom of the inning. Three straight singles by Lodise, Max Williams and Hunter Carns loaded the bases. Two wild pitches scored two runs, and then an infield single by Myles Bailey and an RBI groundout by BJ Gibson pushed the FSU advantage to 7-2.

That was enough for the Seminoles, who won despite leaving the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings and not having a single two-out RBI all game.
Florida State’s offense finished with 12 hits and drew six walks off of Georgetown pitching. Along with Lodise’s big game, Cal Fisher (two hits and two walks) and Bailey each had multiple hits for the Seminoles.
Martinez pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Seminoles, allowing just one baserunner while striking out five.
Florida State’s trio of Arnold, Abraham and Martinez combined to strike out 15 on the night. The two teams play again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
