The dismal start of the 2022-23 Florida State men’s basketball season continued Thursday in Lake Buena Vista, as the Seminoles trailed from the beginning against underdog Siena and came out on the wrong end of an 80-63 defeat.

According to the Associated Press, it was Siena’s first victory against a team from a Power 5 conference in eight years, and the first against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference in 12 years. The Saints were picked in the preseason to finish sixth in the Metro Conference; they were 8.5-point underdogs against Florida State.

FSU falls to 1-5 on the season, while Siena improves to 3-2.

Sophomore guard Matthew Cleveland led Florida State with 14 points, junior Cam’Ron Fletcher added 13 and junior Caleb Mills had 11. But as a team, the Seminoles connected on just 20 of 55 shots from the field (36.4 percent), while Siena connected on 27 of 52 (57.7 percent).

The Saints also were better at the 3-point line, where they connected on 9 of 22 shots, and the free-throw line (17 of 20). FSU hit 4 of 15 shots from long range and 19 of 25 from the line.

As has been a common refrain this season, the Seminoles were out-rebounded by the Saints, 31-29.

Former North Carolina reserve Andrew Platek scored a career-high 20 points against Florida State, and Fort Myers native Javian McCollum chipped in 18 points with a career-high 8 assists.

The Seminoles, who have been short-handed all season, lost center Naheem McLeod to ejection for a Flagrant 2 foul just before halftime.

Next up for FSU will be a game Friday against Stanford, which fell to Ole Miss later Thursday, 72-68.
