Florida State blasts Penn, 24-2, to open weekend series

The Florida State baseball team is going to lose at some point this season. Maybe even sometime this month.
But it’s not going to be in a game where Jamie Arnold gets 24 runs of support.
That’s precisely what happened on Friday night as the Seminoles bombarded the visiting Penn Quakers, 24-2, in a seven-inning game at Dick Howser Stadium in the series opener between the two teams.
Florida State is now 5-0 on the season. Penn is 0-1.
Florida State batted around in the first and second innings, scoring five runs in each frame. Then after plating just a paltry two runs in the third, the Seminoles came back and added another five runs in the fourth inning, culminating with an opposite-field, three-run home run by Drew Faurot that sailed over the screen in right.
After a scoreless fifth, Florida State’s offense — with a number of substitutes getting at-bats — put up another crooked number in the sixth with a seven-run outburst. Freshman second baseman Jace Estes had two hits in the inning, including a two-run single up the middle, to finish off the scoring for the Seminoles.
Obviously, the 24 runs were more than enough for Arnold to cruise to his second win of the season.
The junior lefty was his typical dominant self for five innings on Friday, allowing no runs and just two hits while walking none and striking out eight in 64 pitches. And he did it despite having to sit in the dugout for long stretches of time while his teammates kept racking up hits and runs.
Every Florida State starter had at least one hit, with Faurot, Max Williams, Gage Harrelson, Cal Fisher, Jaxson West and Nathan Cymela all producing multiple hits. Faurot led the way with five RBIs. Fisher had four and Cymela had three.

Florida State finished with 18 singles and one extra-base hit — the Faurot homer. The Seminoles also drew 10 walks and were hit with three pitches.
Penn was able to score two unearned runs in the sixth inning due to two errors by backup third baseman Noah Sheffield.
Jacob Marlowe, who missed all of last season after having multiple heart surgeries, made his FSU debut in the sixth inning and got the final out of the inning on a groundout to short.
He then pitched a scoreless seventh inning, with a pair of strikeouts, to wrap up the mercy-rule win for the Seminoles.
The two teams meet again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
