Florida State falls to No. 5 in College Football Playoff ranking
Losing Jordan Travis didn’t cost the Florida State Seminoles their game last Saturday, but it likely played a role in the Seminoles losing their top-four ranking from the College Football Playoff selection committee.
After weeks of standing pat at No. 4, Florida State fell to No. 5 when the latest playoff rankings were revealed Tuesday night. Undefeated Washington moved up to No. 4 after its impressive win last weekend at top-20 Oregon State.
The top three for the second consecutive week are Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan in that order.
Florida State is 11-0 on the season with one game remaining — Saturday at rival Florida. The Seminoles will be playing that game without star quarterback Travis, who went down with a catastrophic leg injury last Saturday night.
If FSU wins that game in Gainesville, it will have a great chance to move back into the Top 4 as Michigan and Ohio State are playing each other this weekend.
CFP Committee Chair Boo Corrigan said the Seminoles’ slip had more to do with Washington’s improving resume than it did Travis’ injury, but he added that the committee will keep an eye on Florida State to see how the team looks with Tate Rodemaker at quarterback.
“That’s what the next couple weeks are going to be about, is continuing to watch Florida State,” Corrigan said. “Watch how they do. They’ve got a couple of tough games against Florida down in The Swamp and the ACC championship. We’ve got two more evaluation points that are going to come in the next two weeks.”

Florida State coach Mike Norvell appeared on ESPN’s selection show Tuesday evening and said the focus for the Seminoles isn’t on one player, or the committee’s rankings.
“We’ve got great players in all three phases, and I think we’ve shown that throughout the course of this season,” head coach Mike Norvell said on ESPN following the ranking release. “Ultimately, we’ve got to control the things we can control, go out and improve and continue to get better.”
