Florida State gets some much-needed good news on the recruiting trail Saturday night by getting a commitment from four-star running back Byron Louis.

Shortly after FSU knocked off Cal, 14-9, to record its first victory of the year, the American Heritage standout Louis chose the Seminoles over Wisconsin, Miami and Georgia.

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound recruit is a top-300 player in the country, as well as a top-20 running back in the 2025 class.

At the start of Louis’ recruitment, Florida State was not a huge factor. However, once he saw former players from his high school — including Marvin Jones Jr. and Earl Little Jr. — join the Seminoles through the transfer portal, it caught his attention. And the rest was history.

Louis said he actually committed to Florida State when he took his official visit this past summer.

“I did my due diligence, I took my official visits,” Louis told On3’s Chad Simmons. “And on my official visit to Florida State, I committed to the coaches. They have known about my commitment for a few months, so it feels great to let everyone know.”

Louis already had a strong relationship with Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain from Surtain’s time as head coach at American Heritage, and he developed a close bond with FSU running backs coach David Johnson as well.

Louis talked to Warchant about his relationship with Johnson back in August.

“It’s really the coaching staff, and the people at Florida State,” Louis said. “It’s rare to find genuine coaches that genuinely want to check in on you to see how you are, Instead of them just doing their job and recruiting you, actually wanting to get to know you really personally and build that relationship. So I feel like that’s something that always stands out.”

Louis is the second player from American Heritage to commit to Florida State in the 2025 class. The first was four-star defensive back Greg “ZAE” Thomas, who made his pledge during the summer.
