Florida State Makes Top 5 for 5-star OL Josh Petty
Five-star interior offensive lineman Josh Petty narrowed down his list of schools following a visit to Stanford this past weekend.
“My final five schools are Stanford, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Ohio State and Florida State,” Petty told On3’s director of recruiting, Chad Simmons.
Auburn, Clemson and Oregon appear to be the schools cut from contention for the five-star.
A big reason for Florida State making the top five for Petty is the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator and line coach, Alex Atkins.
“He is awesome,” Petty told Warchant last month “He is very smart and understands how to develop talent.”
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Petty is a top-25 player in the 2025 class and the second-best interior offensive lineman in the country.
Florida State has been trending for the five-star from Roswell, Ga., for some time now. On3’s Vice President of Recruiting and Transfer Portal, Steve Wiltfong, recently put in an RPM pick in favor of the Seminoles to land Petty with a 60 percent confidence rate.

One reason Florida State has emerged as the perceived leader in this recruitment is the fact that Petty’s sister will start attending FSU this fall.
“They have some variables working in their favor,” Petty’s father, James, told On3’s Steve Wiltfong earlier this year. “He has a great relationship with the O-Line coach Atkins and Coach [Mike] Norvell).”
The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder also told Warchant last month that Florida State stands out.
“Coaching, academics, development, energy, and my sister will be attending as a freshman this fall,” he said.
Tallahassee will be the final official visit destination for Petty on June 21. That final weekend before the recruiting dead period kicks in has become the marquee weekend for Florida State recruiting this cycle.
