Caleb Mills set Tucker Center records for most free throws made and attempted by a Florida State player on Saturday against Boston College. But that was about all the positives the Seminoles could take away from yet another loss in a forgettable season.

The visiting Eagles raced out to a 19-point first-half lead and then held on the rest of the way for a 75-69 victory over Florida State on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles are now 6-11 in the ACC and 8-20 overall.

It’s the third time in school history, and the first in Leonard Hamilton’s tenure, that Florida State has lost 20 games in a season. The school record is 21, set by Steve Robinson’s team in 2000-2001.

Unless the Seminoles somehow win out, they will at least tie the all-time mark, and the reality is they’ll undoubtedly break the dubious record before the month is over.

Boston College 7-foot center Quinten Post was 5-of-5 on 3-pointers in the first half in helping the Eagles build a 19-point lead 14 minutes into the game. The Seminoles kept whittling that deficit down, cutting it to 11 at halftime, and to as low as four points on multiple occasions, but they could never get any closer.

Florida State shot just 30.5 percent from the floor and 17.6 percent from 3-point range. Darin Green Jr. was 3-of-11 from beyond the arc, and the rest of the team was 0-for-6. Green finished with 13 points and Chandler Jackson added 10 off the bench.

Mills led the way with 27 points on 17-of-21 from the free-throw line and 5-of-14 from the field. The North Carolina native drew 14 fouls in the game. The Seminoles were 30-of-34 from the free-throw line, but only 18-of-59 from the floor overall.

It was the most free throws attempted by a Florida State player since Hugh Durham’s 21 against Loyola-New Orleans in 1957. And it was the most free throws made in a game since Jim Oler (who also holds the single-game record at 22) made 17 against Tampa in February 1956.

The previous record for free throws made by an FSU player in the Tucker Center was Bob Sura, who went 16-for-16 against South Florida in November 1994.

Florida State’s leading scorer and rebounder, Matthew Cleveland, missed his second straight game with back spasms.

The Seminoles have a week off before playing at Miami next Saturday.
