In the wake of Jimbo Fisher’s firing at Texas A&M over the weekend, Mike Norvell’s name appeared as a potential head coaching replacement on several “Hot Boards” across the country, including one composed by On3’s Andy Staples.

So for the first time since he became the Seminoles’ head coach four years ago, Norvell was asked Monday about being a hot commodity in the college football coaching world.

“There’s not really any point to talk about it,” Norvell answered. “It’s funny how sometimes those things get out there and people want to try to use that — especially in recruiting and things like that.”

Norvell laughed and recounted how as losses mounted in his first few years in Tallahassee, opposing coaching staffs would tell recruits to be worried about his long-term job security.

Florida State’s head coach said he responded by telling prospects that negative spin would soon be about wins, not losses.

“I told (recruits) then, I said, ‘Watch, in two years, everybody is going to be trying to use the other thing,'” Norvell said, referring to the message of departure due to success.

In his final comment on the rumor mill, Norvell returned his answer to Florida State itself.

“I can’t control any of that,” he said. “Obviously, we’re so excited about what we’re building here. Where we’re going. The opportunity that’s ahead. I mean, this is a special place, and I think that speaks for itself.

“So I’m grateful for the opportunity, but I can’t control all those things.”
