Florida State’s athletics department generated the second-highest revenue in the ACC during Fiscal Year 2022 and ranked No. 15 nationally in that category among public schools.

The revenue numbers for Florida State were previously reported by Warchant and other media outlets in February, but the school-by-comparison was released Wednesday by USA Today.

According to the USA Today survey, FSU’s total revenue for the year was slightly behind that of conference-leading Virginia. The Cavaliers generated just under $162 million, while FSU produced over $161 million — the total difference was about $770,000.

(Note: These numbers are for Fiscal Year 2022, which ended last summer.)

Clemson ranked third in the ACC and 17th nationally with about $158 million in revenue, though it’s worth noting that the Tigers spent about $7 million less that year than did FSU and Virginia. The Seminoles and Cavaliers both spent over $150 million, while Clemson’s expenses totaled just over $143 million.

Because private schools are not required to release their financial statements, only eight public ACC schools are included in the report: FSU, Virginia, Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The conference’s private schools are Miami, Boston College, Duke, Syracuse, Wake Forest and Notre Dame.

Pitt is a public university, so it is not clear why the Panthers are not included in the USA Today database.

From a national perspective, FSU’s revenue would rank No. 6 in the Big Ten and No. 7 in the SEC. Of course, those conference schools receive much more money from their television and media contracts.

Florida, for example, reported revenue of over $190 million for Fiscal Year 2022, which is nearly $30 million more than Florida State.

Louisville ranked fourth in the ACC and 23rd nationally at about $146 million in revenue. There was a substantial drop from there to North Carolina ($122 million) at No. 32 and Virginia Tech ($113 million) at No. 38.

Georgia Tech ($106 million) checked in at No. 44 nationally, followed by N.C. State ($102 million) at No. 48.

Ohio State ranked No. 1 nationally with a whopping $251,615,345 in revenue, followed by No. 2 Texas at nearly $240 million. Alabama, Michigan and Georgia were the only three other public schools to post revenues of over $200 million.

Of the top 10 schools in this list, five were in the SEC, three were in the Big Ten and two were in the Big 12. And the two from the Big 12 (Texas and Oklahoma) will soon be in the SEC.
