FSU Baseball blasts 6 HRs in 14-1 run rule-victory at Miami

A few hours before his No. 5 Florida State baseball team opened its three-game series at Miami on Thursday night, Link Jarrett said the keys to success on the road would be pitching and defense.
The Seminoles delivered both of those, and the six home runs they blasted didn’t hurt either.
Powered by two homers apiece from Alex Lodise and Hunter Carns and an excellent outing on the mound from junior Joey Volini, Florida State walloped the Hurricanes in Coral Gables, 14-1.
The game was called after seven innings due to the run rule. Florida State improves to 19-2, while Miami falls to 13-10.
FSU’s batters pounded out 14 hits in the victory, while Volini completely shut down the Hurricanes’ offense. The junior left-hander allowed just one run on two hits in seven innings; he struck out nine and walked one to improve his record to 6-0 on the season.
But the Seminoles’ offense was at least as impressive.
Max Williams and Myles Bailey set the tone in the first inning with a pair of home runs to give Florida State an early 3-0 lead. The Seminoles then blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning, then tacked on three more in each the sixth and seventh frames to make it 14-1.

There were several stars for the ‘Noles, but none bigger than Lodise. The shortstop went 4-for-5 with the two HRs, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Carns added his two homers on a 2-for-4 night, and three other ‘Noles registered at least two hits. Gage Harrelson went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored; Max Williams went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs and 1 run; and Bailey went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.
Florida State and Miami will play Game 2 on Friday at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network. Ace Jamie Arnold (3-0, 0.87 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Seminoles; Miami is expected to go with junior right-hander Griffin Hugus (2-2, 3.95).
