FSU Baseball brings sports, and maybe some healing and normalcy, back with 11-6 win

The healing will take some time. But Tuesday was perhaps the first step for the FSU community.

After a weekend in which all campus and sporting events were canceled due to the tragic campus shooting on Thursday, the FSU baseball team returned to action Tuesday afternoon with a midweek game against Stetson University.

And the Florida State players had a whole lot of company at Dick Howser Stadium to support them for their first game back, which they went on to win, 11-6, by smashing three home runs.

Thousands of students packed the two outfield bleachers, and the Marching Chiefs were on the infield for a 30-minute pregame ceremony.

The ceremony included the Chiefs playing multiple songs, including the fight song, the national anthem, the “Warchant” and the Florida State alma mater. While the songs were being performed, more than 1,000 FSU students and faculty were welcomed onto the Mike Martin Field outfield to be a part of the pregame ceremony.

And when it was over, Dr. Matthew Ramseyer, a Tallahassee Medical Healthcare trauma response surgeon, went out to the mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch. It wasn’t quite a strike — a little high — but it was plenty close enough.

And with that moment, the first FSU sporting event since Thursday officially began.

And maybe, just maybe, the healing for the community and the university did, too.
