FSU Baseball falls to Duke in ACC Tournament title game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Florida State fell to Duke, 16-4, Sunday afternoon in the ACC Championship Game at Truist Field. Cam Smith and Jaime Ferrer each hit a two-run home run for the Seminoles (42-15), who will enter the NCAA Tournament tied for the league lead in wins.

Florida State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Smith’s 14th home run of the season before the Blue Devils answered with a five-spot in the top of the second. Duke added grand slams in the fourth and sixth inning and a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Ferrer cut into a 9-2 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning with his 17th home run of the year, surpassing his combined total as a freshman and sophomore.

Catcher Jaxson West had two hits and threw out two runners on the basepaths, doubling his season total. Marco Dinges was on base three times, hitting a double and drawing a pair of walks.

Carson Dorsey (5-4) allowed four runs for the Seminoles. FSU is now 7-2 in his starts this year.

Dinges, James Tibbs III and Drew Faurot were named to the All-Tournament Team.

OF NOTE:

* Cam Smith hit his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. Smith’s 14 home runs are a career high and he has reached safely in 10 straight games and 56 of 57 this year. Smith was 2-for-4, his team-high 31st multi-hit game.

* Jaime Ferrer added a two-run home run, his second of the tournament and 17th of the season. He had 16 combined home runs over his first two years at Florida State.

* FSU has 107 home runs this season, a 52-home run improvement from last year. The Seminoles have a home run in 31 of the past 32 games and 52 of 57 games this season.

* Marco Dinges doubled prior to Ferrer’s home run, his 11th of the season. He also hit a double in the semifinals against Wake Forest.

* James Tibbs singled in the seventh inning, extending his on-base streak to 15 games.

* Alex Lodise drew a walk in the second inning, extending his on-base streak to 14 games, a career high.

* Relief pitcher Noah Short pitched 2.0 innings, his longest since 2022. His three strikeouts tied a season high.

* Catcher Jaxson West threw out two runners on the basepaths, matching his season total.

* Daniel Cantu singled and has a 10-game hitting streak, a season long.

* Florida State scored 37 runs in the 2024 ACC Championship, its most in an ACC Championship since 2004 (43 in five games).

Florida State will play in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Regional host sites will be announced Sunday at 8:30 p.m. via the NCAA Baseball social media channels, while the full 64-team field – including the top 16 seeds ranked – will be revealed on Monday selection show (noon, ESPN2).
