FSU Baseball wraps up sweep of Penn with 5-3 win Sunday

On a day when the FSU bats couldn’t muster many big hits, the Seminoles’ excellent pitching was good enough to wrap up a three-game sweep of visiting Penn on Sunday with a 5-3 victory.
FSU starter Wes Mendes and three relievers limited the Quakers to five hits, while striking out 11 and walking five.
FSU is now 7-0 on the season, while Penn falls to 0-3.
Mendes, a sophomore left-hander, delivered a second consecutive strong performance to start his Florida State career. The Ole Miss transfer allowed one run on three hits in five innings; he struck out eight and walked one. That gives him 16 strikeouts and just two walks in his first two outings as a Seminole.
Junior righty Maison Martinez allowed one run on two hits over the next three innings, then senior left-hander Connor Hults and junior righty Ben Barrett finished things up in the ninth.
FSU opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double from cleanup hitter Cal Fisher and an RBI single from catcher Jaxson West. The Seminoles then extended their lead to 4-0 in the second on three hits (all singles) and an error by the Penn defense.

The only RBI in the inning was credited to leadoff batter Gage Harrelson, who drove home Brody DeLamielleure with a single to left.
Shortstop Alex Lodise then blasted a solo home run off the left-field scoreboard to give FSU a five-run advantage in the fourth.
Penn responded with one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, but neither team did much offensively after that. The Quakers’ final run came in the top of the ninth on a walk, wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.
The Seminoles finished with nine hits but stranded 11 runners on base. Max Williams and Harrelson were the only two FSU batters to record two hits.
The ‘Noles struck out 10 times while drawing just three walks.
Florida State returns to action Tuesday at Jacksonville University.
