FSU Basketball community mourns death of former basketball player Ryan Reid

The Florida State men’s basketball community was grappling with another tragic loss Thursday morning as word began to spread about the passing of former power forward Ryan Reid.
Reid, a Lauderdale Lakes native who played for Florida State from 2006-10, died Wednesday after a medical emergency, according to a source close to the program and posts on social media from family and friends.
He was 38 years old.
Reid’s passing is the second such tragic event to hit the Florida State community in recent years. In 2020, former center Michael Ojo died after collapsing during a training session overseas. He was 27 at the time.
Reid was a central figure in the early stages of Leonard Hamilton’s tenure as Florida State men’s basketball coach. A 6-foot-8, 237-pound forward, he was known as a tremendous defender and hard-nosed competitor.
He came to Florida State as a four-star recruit and top-100 prospect nationally after starring at Boyd Anderson High.

Thanks in large part to his play and leadership, Florida State ended a decade-long drought of NCAA Tournament appearances during his final two seasons. The Seminoles went 25-10 during his junior year and 22-10 in his senior campaign.
Despite averaging just 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds as a senior, Reid was selected by the Oklahoma Thunder in the second round of the 2010 NBA Draft. He would go on to play nearly a decade of professional basketball internationally, in countries such as France, Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan.
Reid returned to Tallahassee this past spring with family members and dozens of other former Florida State players for Hamilton’s final home game as head coach.
Information regarding memorial services will be provided as it becomes available.
