FSU Basketball lands 4-star transfer forward Alex Steen

Florida State men’s basketball coach Luke Loucks took another step toward toward solidifying his frontcourt on Monday by landing a commitment from former Florida Southern forward Alex Steen.
The 6-foot-9, 225-pounder from Panama City was named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year each of the past two seasons, and he also earned first-team all-conference honors. On3 lists him as a four-star prospect out of the transfer portal.
Steen averaged a double-double for the Division-II school as a junior this past season, scoring 17.9 points and recording 10.6 rebounds per game. One year earlier, he averaged 16.6 points and 10.6 rebounds.
“FSU was kind of an easy choice,” Steen told Warchant of his decision. “Being only a couple hours away from home and close enough where all my friends and family can come support is huge. But also just the connection with the coaches over the past couple days, you can tell how genuine they are and what type of environment is around them.”
Coming out of Arnold High School, Steen had some small Division-I offers but none in the state of Florida. And he said he wanted to stay close to home.

“I played high school on the panhandle, which is very in the woods, so I was not seen a ton,” Steen told On3 recently. “I averaged 22 a game as a junior and 23 my senior year. I did have D-I offers from Troy and Austin Peay along with a handful of good D-II’s. Looking at all my schools, I wanted to stay in Florida, and Florida Southern has a history of winning, and they recruited me hard.”
With interest from a slew of Division-I schools this time, he recently told On3’s Jamie Shaw recently what he was looking for in a new home.
“I want to go somewhere I can compete and where I can really help winning,” he said. “I’m a winning type of guy, I make winning plays, so I want to go somewhere I will have the chance to work my tail off, compete, and help win.”
This is Florida State’s second commitment in the last few days, joining high school prospect Thomas Bassong. Loucks earlier landed four transfers so far — former Jacksonville guard Robert McCray, former Clemson forward Chauncey Wiggins, former St. Bonaventure forward Lajae Jones and former Drexel guard Kobe Magee.
