The FSU baseball team’s offense had scored 42 runs in its previous three games heading into Saturday.

It has now scored 42 runs in its previous four games.

The No. 2 Seminoles struggled all afternoon offensively, and starter Joey Volini gave up five earned runs on the mound as they fell at Cal, 5-0.

FSU is now 35-11 overall and 15-8 in the ACC. It was the second time this season the Seminoles have been shut out (the first was in a 12-0 run-rule loss to Wake Forest).

Cal, which is at the bottom of the ACC standings, improves to 20-28 overall and 7-19 in conference. The rubber match of the three-game series will be played on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.

It’s not just that the Seminoles were shut out on Saturday that was so surprising, it’s that they hardly even threatened to score against a Cal pitching staff that came in with a team ERA of 5.94.

Florida State managed just six hits all game (all singles) and had only six baserunners as well. The Cal pitching duo of Oliver de la Torre and Gavin Eddy struck out 13 Seminoles and walked none.

Eddy came in with an ERA of 5.79 in 51.1 innings pitched, and de la Torre had an ERA of 6.38 in 36.2 innings pitched. They both lowered those numbers substantially against an FSU offense that had little punch in Game 2.

The Seminoles’ only real offensive threat came in the top of the fourth. Alex Lodise lined a single to right, Max Williams followed with an infield single and then Myles Bailey lined a single to center.

But Cal Fisher struck out and Drew Faurot grounded out to end the inning.

Florida State managed just three hits the rest of the game, and the ‘Noles only had one baserunner reach second base in the final five innings.

Meanwhile, Cal got a solo home run from Ryan Tayman in the third and a two-run homer from Dominic Smaldino in the fifth to take control of the game. Volini walked two batters in that four-run fifth inning and both scored.

Volini wound up taking the loss after allowing five earned runs and seven hits in five innings of work.

John Abraham pitched three hitless innings of relief for the Seminoles, striking out five in the process, but the lack of offense made sure his strong work out of the pen didn’t matter.

Wes Mendes will get the start for the Seminoles on Sunday as they try to pick up a critical road win in the ACC.
