Thousands of students, faculty and other members of the Florida State community gathered on Langford Green on Friday evening to comfort each other and remember the victims of Thursday’s campus shooting.

Florida State dining services coordinator Robert Morales and Aramark executive Tiru Chabba were killed in the mass shooting, and six others were hospitalized.

Classes and other events were canceled on FSU’s campus Friday, and neighboring schools Florida A&M University and Tallahassee State College did the same to show their support. The community then came together for the vigil just outside of Doak Campbell Stadium.

Later that evening, Florida State football coach Mike Norvell and men’s basketball coach Luke Loucks posted comments on their social media accounts expressing sympathy for the victims, celebrating the heroics of law enforcement and encouraging others to be the “light” in times of darkness.

“As this day comes to an end, I find myself reflecting over the last 36 hours,” Florida State’s football coach posted on his Twitter/X account. “I do not have the right words which fully grasp the depth of emotions which I feel. The sadness which has covered our wonderful University by the events that took place Thursday is overwhelming. The hurt and anger is infuriating, while not knowing why something like this would ever occur.

“I’m so grateful for the law enforcement and first responders for all they did as they cared for those in need. I am filled with empathy for all the victims, families, and individuals affected by this tragic act. I love this community, it is filled with an incredible culture and a deep care for its residents. Thank you for coming together and loving each other in this time of grieving.

“I am blessed with the responsibility to help guide the leaders of tomorrow to be a positive difference maker in this World. It simply starts with one positive step. In a time of darkness we can be a light for others if we choose to let that light shine. I Love You Tallahassee, FSU and all the NoleFamily! Let’s make a positive impact together as we honor those impacted in this senseless act. Matthew 5:14-16”

Both Norvell and Loucks shared photographs of the massive crowd at Florida State’s vigil with their messages.

“I am devastated by the senseless tragedy that happened on our campus yesterday,” Loucks posted. “One of our players was near the student union and luckily escaped unharmed. Innocent lives were lost in the blink of an eye. It makes me sick. As torn up as we all are, we should be extremely proud of FSU Police Department, all of the first responders, and all of those that stepped up to save lives during and after this terrible act.

“I am humbled by the outreach and the outpouring of love, support, and togetherness that the Florida State and Tallahassee community has shown to the victims and all of those involved. It doesn’t bring back the lives that are lost, but it does give us a sense of hope in times of tragedy. I am honored to work with Florida State President Richard McCullough and A.D. Michael Alford, who both stepped up in the midst of chaos to lead and support our University and its students in any way possible.

“Please hug your loved ones. Call your parents and tell them you love them. Tell your friends you care about them. Everyone is going through something. This world needs more love and less violence.”

Here is a replay of the entire vigil, which included the Marching Chiefs playing a moving rendition of, “Hymn to the Garnet & Gold.”
