Former Southern Cal safety Jarvis Boatwright Jr. arrived for his official visit to Florida State on Thursday, and he committed to the Seminoles early Friday.

Boatwright was a three-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, coming out of high school in Clearwater. He will be a redshirt freshman this fall with the Seminoles and will have four years of eligibility remaining.

FIRST REPORT

You never know when you will get a second shot in college football recruiting and the transfer portal, and the Florida State Seminoles are looking to take advantage of one right now with safety target Jarvis Boatwright Jr.

The former Southern Cal defensive back is originally from Clearwater Central Catholic and was heavily recruited by Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell out of high school. The Seminoles actually hosted Boatwright for a pair of visits during his original recruiting process

While he did not see any playing time as a freshman at USC this past fall, Boatwright was very productive in high school and could help fill Florida State’s need for depth at safety. The Seminoles liked the 6-foot-1, 191-pound DB’s coverage skills and ability to tackle in space when he was coming out of high school.

Boatwright arrived in Tallahassee for his official visit on Thursday and is expected to stay for at least part of Friday.

Florida State returns multi-year starter Shyheim Brown at one safety spot, and the ‘Noles have several other safeties with extensive playing experience, including KJ Kirkland, Earl Little Jr., Conrad Hussey and Ashlynd Barker.

But Florida State has been active with several safety prospects in this portal window. The Seminoles also were in the mix for Tennessee transfer Jakobe Thomas, but he committed to Miami on Thursday.

The ‘Noles already bolstered their cornerback position by adding a transfer commitment and signing from top CB Jeremiah Wilson.

Michael’s analysis on DB Jarvis Boatwright Jr.

It seems unlikely that Boatwright would be an impact player immediately for Florida State, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the Seminoles take two safeties in this portal window. But given Norvell’s history with him, and looking at the changing role of the safety position in Tony White’s defense, they likely see him as a good fit for the future.

It’s not clear what other schools will be making a run at Boatwright, but the fact that Florida State got him on campus so quickly is a good indication of the Seminoles’ high interest.

If everything clicks during this visit, this could be one that moves very quickly. I don’t think it’s necessarily a slam dunk, but it’s definitely trending in a positive direction. I have also heard that FSU is still talking with other safety targets, so again, that leads me to believe we could see more names emerge.
