Florida State defensive back Travis Jay announces impending transfer
Florida State defensive back Travis Jay announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Saturday afternoon. He becomes the seventh player since the end of spring football to leave the program.
A former four-star defensive back from neighboring Madison County, Jay bounced between cornerback and safety during his four years in Tallahassee but never really made the impact that was expected when he signed with Florida State as one of the top athletes in the United States.
Jay appeared to be in the running to get in the safety rotation for defensive coordinator Adam Fuller’s secondary during the spring season before suffering an undisclosed injury that kept him out of the spring game.
Jay played in 16 games during his Florida State career including three starts. He also missed two full seasons due to academic/eligibility issues. He saw his last action during the Seminoles’ 31-28 win over Miami in November 2021; he played five snaps.
With his departure, along with fellow converted safety Omarion Cooper earlier in the week, Florida State is down to three scholarship safeties on the active roster in Shyheim Brown, Akeem Dent and true freshman K.J. Kirkland (Conrad Hussey and Ja’Bril Rawls are both incoming 2023 signees that will be on the roster once they graduate high school).
Sunday is the last day for non-grad students to enter the college football transfer portal.
As of Saturday afternoon, Jay is not officially in the portal, but his name has been removed from the official Florida State roster at Seminoles.com.
