The early signing period has taken most of the steam out of the traditional National Signing Day, however Florida State is still expected to be active and sign three, maybe even four, recruits out of the high school ranks today.

Three-star offensive tackle Chastan Brown, three-star interior offensive linemen Chavez “Sandman” Thompson and legacy three-star cornerback Antonio Cromartie Jr. are all expected to sign with Florida State today. In addition, top-200 edge rusher Zahir Mathis will decide between Maryland and Florida State.

Cromartie Jr. was the first to sign this morning, shortly after 9 a.m. The son of former All-Pro and Pro Bowl corner Antonio Cromartie Sr. was offered a scholarship by Florida State on Christmas Day, and he quickly followed up with an official visit in January. The three-star recruit then quickly committed 24 hours after the official visit.

Three-star offensive tackle Chastan Brown is expected to sign around 11 a.m. Brown was committed to UCF under former head coach and now Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzhan. But Malzahn and offensive line coach Herb Hand quickly made Brown a priority once they moved on to FSU.

The Georgia lineman decommitted from UCF as soon as it was announced that Malzhan was leaving, and he committed to FSU behind the scenes fairly quickly. He did not publicly announce his decision until two weeks ago.

Florida State will then watch the decision of four-star edge rusher Zahir Mathis of Pennsylvania. Mathis officially visited FSU in early January, and he did not take another official visit until Maryland this past weekend.

According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the buzz is with Maryland going into decision day, however Warchant has been told by sources close to the recruitment that Florida State is making a strong push to land the four-star.

Lastly, three-star interior offensive lineman Sandman Thompson is set to sign with Florida State at 4 p.m. Thompson was a recruit that FSU started pushing for once Hand became the offensive line coach.

Hand recruited Thompson to be a center at Florida State, and once he got in for an official visit, it did not take long to flip his commitment from FIU. The three-star was also committed to Oregon at one point during his recruitment.

Florida State enters this signing period with a top-20 class nationally.
