FSU golf star Luke Clanton gets shot at earning PGA Tour card this weekend

FSU golfer Luke Clanton will attempt to earn his PGA Tour card today and Friday at the Cognizant Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.
“It’d be amazing. I mean I’ve watched this event growing up since I was probably 9 or 10 years old, so again it would be a perfect story,” Clanton said at his press conference Wednesday. “But we don’t know if it’s my time yet. My time will come, and we don’t know if it’s this week or next week or whenever it will be. So again, I’m just going to trust the Lord and know that, it’s golf. It’s going to go my way or not go my way. …
“I would love for it to be this week with all my friends and family coming up, but I’m just going to focus on one shot at a time.”
Clanton is currently sitting at 19 PGA Tour U Accelerated points. PGA Tour U Accelerated is a program for junior, sophomore and freshman college golfers, who can earn a spot on the tour by earning 20 points in their first three years of eligibility.
If the Florida State junior makes the cut after Friday’s second round, that will add the final point he needs to officially be a member of the PGA Tour.

This is actually Clanton’s second chance to earn that 20th point as he missed the cut by just a stroke at the Waste Management Phoenix Open when he missed the final putt by mere inches on 18.
Adding to what could be a special week for the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur, the Cognizant Classic is somewhat of a hometown event since he grew up in nearby Hialeah.
“I’ve played this golf course a couple of times for sure in my lifetime,” Clanton said during an interview on Golf Channel on Wednesday. “And to be able to play kind of near home and have a chance to kind of earn my card, this would be pretty unbelievable.
Clanton teed off at 7:07 a.m. on Hole 10 on Thursday, playing alongside Florida State alum Daniel Berger, who recently returned to the tour following back surgery. Their group is the featured group on ESPN-Plus.
