FSU men hang on for dramatic 73-72 win over Notre Dame
The Florida State men’s basketball team didn’t score for the final two minutes of the game.
Thanks to one last stand by the defense, it didn’t matter.
Trailing by one point with 6.5 seconds left, Notre Dame had to go the length of the floor to try to pull off the comeback win, but the Fighting Irish threw the ball away, Darin Green Jr. caught the errant pass, and the Seminoles celebrated their 73-72 win over the visitors from South Bend.
Florida State is now 4-10 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. Notre Dame drops to 7-5 and 0-2.
After a 1-9 start while battling through a number of injuries, the Seminoles have won three of their last four games.
Matthew Cleveland scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Seminoles. With that effort, he became the first Florida State player since Corey Louis in 1995 to record three straight double-doubles. Freshman Cameron Corhen had by far his best game of the season, finishing with a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Corhen’s turnaround bucket with 2:06 left gave the Seminoles a 73-66 lead. Those were the final points they would score, but it wound up being just enough.
Corhen and the other four starters all played at least 31 minutes for Leonard Hamilton’s team. Corhen was in the lineup because starter Naheem McLeod was out with an injury. And the FSU bench scored exactly one point in the game on a Tom House free throw.

Still, the Seminoles found a way.
Caleb Mills added 18 for the Seminoles and Jalen Warley had 9 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Notre Dame was led by freshman J.J. Starling’s 20 points, but after starting the game red-hot (the Irish made nine straight field goals at one point in the first half and were 11-of-13 overall to start the game), they barely shot above 40 percent the final 30 minutes.
Florida State now has the next nine days off before taking on Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium on New Year’s Eve.
