FSU men's, women's basketball teams getting back in action after winter breaks
After lengthy winter breaks for the holidays, the Florida State men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to return to action.
The FSU women’s team, which hasn’t played in two weeks — when it rolled to a 23-point win over visiting Jacksonville on Dec. 19 — will take on Virginia Tech tonight in Blacksburg, Va., to begin a full-time slate of ACC play.
The Seminoles, under head coach Brooke Wyckoff, earlier beat SMU in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener in early December. They are now 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in ACC play.
The Florida State men’s basketball team also will play for the first time in two weeks when it hosts visiting Syracuse this Saturday at 6 p.m. The last time Leonard Hamilton’s team played was Saturday, Dec. 21, in a home loss to Louisville. The FSU men are 9-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
FSU women at Virginia Tech
Despite getting off to a strong start to the 2024-25 campaign, Wyckoff’s team will be looking for its first road victory of the season. The Seminoles’ only two losses have come on the road against quality competition; they fell at Illinois in early November and at Tennessee in early December.
Tennessee is nationally ranked and still undefeated this season at 12-0, while Illinois is 11-3 overall and 9-1 at home.
Virginia Tech is 9-3 this season, and the Seminoles have an all-time record of 31-12 against the Hokies.

Florida State ranks second nationally in points per game at 94.9, and star guard Ta’Niya Latson actually leads the country in scoring. The Seminoles’ dynamic junior is averaging 27.2 points per game, while post player Makayla Timpson ranks second nationally with 41 blocked shots.
Tonight’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the ACC Network.
FSU men to host Syracuse
Hamilton’s men’s team will look to rebound after a difficult stretch before the winter break.
Florida State started the year strong with a 7-1 mark, but the Seminoles have since lost three of their last five. They fell at LSU by 10 points, then dropped a road game to N.C. State in overtime.
Relatively easy wins over Tulane and Winthrop were then followed by a disappointing, 90-76 home loss to Louisville.
Now that the Seminoles’ break is coming to an end, they will play host to a Syracuse team that is 6-7 overall and 0-2 in ACC play. The Orange are led by second-year head coach Adrian Autry, who led the team to a 20-12 record (11-9 in conference) last season.
This will be Florida State’s first game since a group of six former FSU players filed a lawsuit against Hamilton for alleged broken promises about NIL payments. None of those players are on the current team, and Hamilton has yet to speak publicly about the allegations.
