FSU Softball takes series with 13-2 win over UVA; Wake pummels FSU Baseball again

The Florida State softball and baseball teams both wrapped up home ACC series on Sunday, and they came away with extremely different results.
The Seminoles’ softball team destroyed Virginia, 13-2, to clinch that series victory. FSU lost the first game Friday before sweeping the final two.
The Florida State baseball team was not as fortunate. After winning the Friday opener and then getting blown out by Wake Forest on Saturday, the Seminoles got hammered again on Sunday, 17-2.
Here are the releases from Florida State Sports Information on both games:
FSU Softball 13, Virginia 2
The No. 10 Florida State softball team (36-6, 11-1) cruised to a 13-2 win in five innings over Virginia (27-12, 8-7) to secure the series win on Sunday afternoon.
Ashtyn Danley got the start in the circle for the Noles and retired the side in order in the first.
A Virginia error gave the Noles its first baserunner of the game, and Jahni Kerr singled to right to put runners on the corners. Michaela Edenfield drew a walk, but Kerr took off on the pitch forcing the throw to second to allow Jaysoni Beachum to come home to give the Noles the lead. Back-to-back walks from Katie Dack and Kennedy Harp added another run.
A couple of wild pitches allowed Edenfield to score to make it 3-0. Angelee Bueno stepped in with the bases loaded with two outs and hammered a ball off the firetruck in right field for her first career home to blow the game open.
Danley threw another scoreless inning in the second, and the Noles got right back to work as Beachum hit a leadoff single. Edenfield hit a one out double off the center field wall to put two runners in scoring position for Dack who hit a rocket off the wall to put the Noles up 9-0.
Back-to-back singles from Bueno and Isa Torres got the Florida State offense going again in the bottom of the third. A passed ball and two walks put two more runs on the board. Shelby McKenzie ripped a line drive to center with the bases loaded to put two more runs on the board to give them a commanding 13-0 lead.
Virginia scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but Mimi Gooden came in in the top of the fifth and retired the Cavaliers in order to end the game.
Danley improved to 8-1 this season with the win after pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. FSU will head out west again as the Noles play Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif., on Wednesday before a three-game series with Cal next weekend.

Wake Forest Baseball 17, Florida State 2
The No. 4 Florida State baseball team lost its first series of the 2025 season with a 17-2 defeat to Wake Forest in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.
FSU entered the weekend having won its first seven series to open the campaign, including three consecutive in the ACC. Off to its best ACC start in nearly 10 years, this is the first time the team has lost back-to-back games in 2025.
In a matchup between two of the top five teams in the conference standings, the Seminoles (25-6, 8-4 ACC) were held to two runs on five hits with two errors. The Demon Deacons (23-10, 9-6 ACC) scored 17 runs on 16 hits with no errors.
Junior shortstop Alex Lodise and junior second baseman Drew Faurot both had two hits and an RBI in the contest. Lodise added a run scored. Sophomore left-handed starter Wes Mendes suffered his first loss of the season and falls to 4-1. He allowed seven runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
The Seminoles went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Faurot to score Lodise. The next inning, it was Lodise who singled home freshman catcher Hunter Carns to make it 2-0.
Mendes left two on in the first after a pair of two-out walks and he retired the side in the second on nine pitches. A groundout ended the third and stranded a runner on third. In the fourth, a leadoff double and a two-run home run gave Wake Forest its first hits and runs of the day, and the visitors took a 4-2 lead with a two-out, two-run homer.
In the fifth, the Demon Deacons scored seven runs on six hits. An RBI single brought in the first before FSU went to the bullpen. Two more singles made it 8-2 and a two-out error and two-RBI base hit made it 11-2.
Wake was retired in order in the sixth and a double play stranded one in the seventh. Wake added six in the eighth on three RBI singles to extend its lead to 17-2.
Florida State travels to in-state rival Florida on Tuesday, April 8. Broadcast live on ESPN2, first pitch in Gainesville is at 7 p.m. ET. The contest is the 2025 series rubber match between the two teams after UF took the opener in Tallahassee on March 11 and FSU earned an 8-4, walk-off win on March 25 in Jacksonville.
