Going back to Supers! FSU Softball shuts out Auburn, 4-0, in Regional finals

With their postseason hopes on the line Sunday afternoon, the Florida State Seminoles got a gritty, gutsy pitching performance from sophomore Ashtyn Danley and just enough offense to knock off Auburn in the finals of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
With the 4-0 victory, FSU will now face the winner of the Texas Tech Regional in the NCAA Super Regional round. Because the Seminoles were the No. 5 national seed, they will be the host team.
After Auburn pulled off an 8-3 upset of FSU earlier in the day to force a deciding final game, Danley threw five scoreless innings and freshman Jazzy Francik followed with two to close it.
While the final score might look clean, Danley walked a tightrope through several tricky situations; she got a triple play to end one threat and a diving stop by Isa Torres with the bases loaded to end another.
Michaela Edenfield blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give FSU an early 2-0 advantage. The Seminoles didn’t crack the scoreboard again until four innings later when freshman pinch hitter Shelby McKenzie blasted a solo shot to push the lead to 3-0.
Then the Seminoles got one insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double from Annie Potter.
In her five innings, Danley allowed just four hits, but she did walk five to go with three strikeouts. The Tigers stranded 10 runners on base.

Auburn had prime opportunities to score in the fourth and fifth innings. With two runners on and no outs in the fourth, the FSU defense turned what appeared to be a double play — until the Tigers tried to catch FSU napping by sending the lead runner home.
FSU first baseman Angelee Bueno was wide awake, and she fired home to record the third out.
In the fifth, the Tigers had the bases loaded and two outs, but Torres made a diving stop and threw to third for the third out.
Francik got out of a jam of her own in the sixth, coaxing a soft line drive for the third out with runners at second and third. She retired the Tigers in order in the seventh to secure the win.
