UPDATE: Norvell discusses Sam McCall situation, says freshmen often get impatient with playing time
Shortly after freshman cornerback Sam McCall posed on social media Monday that he plans to enter the transfer portal — and subsequently deleted the post — Florida State football coach Mike Norvell discussed the frustrations young players often deal with early in their careers.
McCall, the highest-rated recruit in Florida State’s 2022 signing class, has played sparingly in six games, mostly on special teams. He has one tackle and has returned eight kickoffs.
Norvell, in his third year as the Seminoles’ head coach, explained that he wouldn’t want players who are content with not playing.
“We’ve got young freshmen. Some are playing, some are not playing at all, some want to play more,” Norvell said. “If they didn’t have that in them, then they’re not supposed to be here. They’re not supposed to be at Florida State. But with that, it’s about trusting the process of that growth, trusting the process of what they’re doing and then being able to control.”
Norvell chose not to discuss McCall’s situation specifically, but the cornerback posted on Twitter that he was acting “emotionally” when he made his earlier post.

Earlier report
Just two days after one of its biggest wins of the season, the Florida State football team learned Monday morning that freshman cornerback Sam McCall is entering the transfer portal.
Or is he?
McCall, a four-star recruit, was the highest-rated prospect in the Seminoles’ 2022 signing class. He contributed mostly on special teams in his freshman season, recording one tackle in six games. He also returned eight kickoffs for an average of 17.75 yards.
The four-star recruit announced his decision on Instagram before 11 a.m., but after the initial story was posted, he later deleted the post. He then posted on his Instagram story that it’s “not official.”
FSU coach Mike Norvell is scheduled to meet the media at 11:30 a.m., and we will have continuing coverage of this developing story.
