It was far from easy. But it was absolutely worth the wait for the Florida State women’s golf team.

The No. 3-ranked Seminoles won their first-ever ACC Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. And it came down to the very last shot of the very last match against the No. 7 Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

With the team score tied at 2-2, Florida State freshman Alexandra Gazzoli won her match against Wake’s Carolina Chacarra with a par on No. 18 to secure history for head coach Amy Bond and her program. Chacarra and Gazzoli were tied after 17 holes, but Wake’s top player drove her tee shot out of bounds on the Par-5 18th and had to go back to the tee and hit again.

Meanwhile, Gazzoli’s drive stayed in bounds. She then produced a steady par — while Chacarra eventually bogeyed — to clinch the trophy for the Seminoles and set off a celebratory group hug between her and teammates on the 18th green.

Gazzoli’s biggest putt might have been on the hole before, though. The lifelong Seminole fan, whose father, two brothers and uncle all graduated from Florida State, drained a 12-foot par putt on No. 17 to halve the hole and send her match to the 18th all square.

Teammate Kaylah Williams, the senior captain, was also in an all-square match on the 18th hole in the pairing right in front. Williams birdied the hole with a five-foot putt to beat Wake’s Sarah Lydic to even the team score 2-2 and set the stage for Gazzoli.

Florida State was able to make history and beat a top-10 team despite not getting a point from Lottie Woad, who has essentially been the No. 1 amateur in the world for two straight years.

Woad lost her match 2 and 1 to Wake’s Anne-Sterre Den Dunnen, and when Macy Pate closed out FSU’s Sophia Fullbrook on the 15th hole, the Demon Deacons had a 2-1 lead and seemed on the verge of closing the Seminoles out and winning their fourth conference title in the last seven years.

But it didn’t happen. Williams and Gazzoli both came up clutch down the stretch to pick up wins for the Seminoles. Florida State’s Mirabel Ting, who is ranked the No. 1 college player in the country, easily won her match over Wake’s Chloe Kovelesky earlier in the afternoon.

Florida State will undoubtedly be one of the top overall seeds for the upcoming NCAA postseason. Regional play starts May 5.
