How weak is latest ACC expansion? Even Tobacco Road and national media are blasting it

Virtually every round of Atlantic Coast Conference expansion has been met by applause from the media along Tobacco Road, many of whom playfully called former ACC Commissioner John Swofford a “ninja” for his ability to add schools behind the public eye.
Even though the additions of schools like Boston College and Syracuse have done little for the conference’s bottom line, the moves were largely celebrated at the time.
That goodwill has apparently not carried over to the latest round of ACC expansion.
When news broke Friday morning that the ACC is adding Stanford, Cal and SMU — three schools that are far outside of the conference’s geographic footprint and likely will do nothing to improve the league’s finances — it was met with immediate scorn from ACC media far and wide, as well as some national pundits.
