FSU lands a commitment from Jacksonville DB Kenton Kirkland.

The good news continues to flow in for Florida State on the recruiting front Monday as the Seminoles landed their third defensive back commitment of the 2023 class when Jacksonville Raines star safety Kenton Kirkland chose the ‘Noles over Kentucky in a close battle.

The recruitment for the in-state standout was a very tight one as FSU and Kentucky both slugged it out for the versatile defensive back. Kirkland has long had the ‘Noles as his top school, but the Wildcats were also making a strong push and had some momentum late in the recruiting process.

“I feel like the background and the support system they have and the support system that I will have behind me, I feel like that would be the best fit possible,” Kirkland told On3. “I also want to be a part of that rebuilding phase to say I helped Florida State get back to where they used to be.”

The difference seemed to be the family feel at Florida State and how he’s going to be used in this defense.

Earlier in the summer, it appeared the main position for Kirkland was likely safety. But after the Seminole Showcase event this summer, that position seemed to expand to the corner position as well. Another factor that helped the ‘Noles was the relationship Kirkland has with a lot of players on the team.

Kirkland also raved about the FSU coaches. He’s had a close relationship with defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, DBs coach Marcus Woodson and certainly head coach Mike Norvell.

Kirkland told Warchant.com after the Showcase event, “You can see the excitement on where this program is going.”

On Monday, Kirkland joined that family and he now becomes the third defensive back commitment in the 2023 class.

Kirkland joins safety Quindarrius Jones out of Meridian, Miss., and Pensacola Catholic standout DB prospect Ja’Bril Rawls. He is the Seminoles’ 14th commitment for this class.
