In a move that didn’t seem even remotely possible just a few months ago, FSU has flipped four-star wide receiver and legacy recruit Devin Carter from his previous commitment to Auburn.

The talented wideout, who is a son of former FSU and NFL running back Dexter Carter, not only seemed to be locked in with the Tigers for months, but he appeared to have little interest in his father’s alma mater.

That all changed when Florida State brought in several new offensive coaches, including receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, and now Carter plans to be a Seminole. He announced his commitment on Monday.

“This is it for me,” Carter told On3′ Chad Simmons. “When I visited for the first time this spring, it felt different. Then I went back a week later. And my official visit this summer put the stamp on it. I knew.”

Indeed, Carter took a surprise visit to FSU in the early spring. Then he returned for multiple practices and expressed confidence in the Seminoles’ revamped regime.

“Gus Malzahn, he’s a genius,” Carter said earlier. “He’s an expert and he gets the playmakers the ball. I love that. Then Coach [Mike] Norvell, he’s been the same since I met him. He’s real. I love that guy, and that’s a big reason why Florida State is a top school in my recruitment.”

Carter’s recruitment has been a long and winding journey. He actually was a very early commitment to FSU back in the spring of 2023 before backing out of that pledge in January 2024. He then made a pledge to Auburn in January of this year.

But his affection for the Seminoles seemed to start brewing again in the ensuing months.

“Coach (Tim) Harris and my dad go way back and they coached against each other in high school,” Carter said during an earlier visit. “Just getting that bond back has been great. They recruited me hard when he was at UCF, but now it’s 10 times better. He’s a real coach. His attention to detail in practice is different. I got to chat with Jayvan BoggsElijah Moore and they are actually learning stuff. They feel the program is going in the right direction.”

Even before he committed again to Florida State, Carter said he would be back in Tallahassee for FSU’s season opener against Alabama in Doak Campbell Stadium.
